In response to the call published by ESCL in 2023, fourteen edited volumes were submitted to compete for the ESCL Excellence Award for Collaborative Research 2024. After reviewing the volumes, the ESCL Excellence Award Selection Committee shortlisted three volumes:
- Iberian and Translation Studies: Literary Contact Zones (Liverpool: Liverpool University Press, 2021), edited by Esther Gimeno Ugalde, Marta Pacheco Pinto and Ângela Fernandes;
- Landscapes of Realism: Rethinking Realism in Comparative Perspective (Amsterdam/Philadelphia: John Benjamins, 2021/2022), edited by Dirk Göttsche, Rosa Mucignat and Robert Weninger (vol. 1); Svend Erik Larsen, Steen Bille Jørgensen and Margaret R. Higonnet (vol. 2);
- Le mythe au féminin et l’ (in)visibilisation du corps (Leiden/Boston: Brill, 2023), edited by Brigitte Le Juez and Metka Zupančič.
Finally, on September 5, 2024, at the biennial ESCL Congress in Paris, it was announced that the prize would be awarded to the two volume publication Landscapes of Realism: Rethinking Realism in Comparative Perspective and its six editors Dirk Göttsche, Rosa Mucignat, Robert Weninger, Svend Erik Larsen, Steen Bille Jørgensen and Margaret R. Higonnet. With the Excellence Award, the European Society of Comparative Literature/Société Européenne de Littérature Comparée promotes collaborative comparative research and thus recognizes the often underestimated creative work of the editors.
We would like to congratulate the award-winning editors, as well as the editors of the two runner-up volumes. We would also like to thank the other applicants for their commitment and scholarly work. A new call for applications for the next round will be published in mid-2025.
